An advisor to six governors and two presidents took home MacArthur Beach State Park’s Environmental Champion award at its NatureScaping Festival this month.

The park chose Nathaniel P. Reed to receive the honor, which goes to “one or more individuals who have made exceptional contributions toward the preservation or betterment of the natural environment of Florida.”

“For more than 50 years, Mr. Reed has diligently worked to protect Florida’s natural resources from exploitation and thoughtless destruction. That is why we are proud to present him with the 2018 Environmental Champion Award,” Park Manager David Dearth said in a news release.

Reed became Florida’s first environmental advisor to Gov. Claude Kirk and went on to serve six governors and two presidents in various capacities. He had a role in buying land for 22 new state parks and helping to establish air quality regions in Florida, according to MacArthur Beach State Park.

He sits on the board of directors of the Everglades Foundation and wrote several books, including “The Everglades: Where Wonders Only Whisper” and “Travels on the Green Highway: An Environmentalist’s Journey.”
